The SES is not a home maintenance crew and it is up to business owners and homeowners to carry out preventative maintenance regularly throughout the year. If a crew has to attend your property for an incident that could have been prevented, we may not be available to attend a more serious emergency.

Here are some tips on being prepared:

Roof – Regularly check your roof for broken or missing tiles or, in the case of Colourbond style roofing, check that your roof is properly secured. Repair any damage.

Gutters and Downpipes – Clean out gutters and downpipes at least twice a year and especially before the first rains in autumn. This prevents water overflowing into verandas, eaves and ceilings.

Boats, Caravans, Trampolines, Outdoor settings – Due to their lightweight construction these items are particularly susceptible to wind damage and are prone to being blown over during storms and strong winds. When storms are forecast, or when the items are not in use, store them away or secure them by tying them down.

Trees – Trim branches overhanging or near your home and hire a contractor to clear trees from powerlines.

Emergency Kit – An emergency kit is essential for short-term survival whether you decide to stay at home or relocate to safer accommodation during an emergency. The kit should include a torch, first aid kit, portable radio, spare batteries, bottled water, non perishable food, insurance policies and other forms of identification or proof of ownership in sealed bags just in case any damage to your home or business is substantial.

Stay Alert – Stay alert to any emergency warnings. During bad weather and in emergencies such as bushfires, you can keep up to date with warnings and advice broadcast on your local ABC radio station or by contacting the DFES information line on 1300 657 209
