ARE YOU PREPARED?
The SES Are! However, they are also aware that last year, 85% of their calls were to damaged homes and businesses
that were not. Often, 30 minutes clearing leaves and debris from gutters, or putting away large objects around the yard prior to a storm, would have meant that our volunteers could have stayed at home with their own families. Please DO NOT be complacent – it can and does happen to you!
The SES is not a home maintenance crew. It is up to business owners and homeowners, to carry out preventative maintenance regularly throughout the year. If a crew has to attend your property for an incident that could have been prevented, we may not be available to attend a more serious emergency.
Here are some tips on being prepared:
Roof - Regularly check your roof for broken or missing tiles or, in the case of Colourbond style roofing, check that your roof is properly secured. Repair any damage.
Gutters and Downpipes – Clean out gutters and downpipes at least twice a year and especially before the first rains in autumn. This prevents water overflowing into verandas, eaves and ceilings. Encourage it to run away!
Boats, Caravans, Trampolines, Outdoor settings – Due to their lightweight construction, these items are particularly susceptible to wind damage and are prone to being blown over during storms and strong winds. When storms are forecast, or when the items are not in use, store them away or secure them by tying them down, so that they don’t fly through your (or your neighbour’s) homes.
Trees – Trim branches overhanging or near your home and hire a contractor to clear trees from powerlines.
Emergency Kit – An emergency kit is essential for short-term survival, whether you decide to stay at home, or relocate to safer accommodation during an emergency. The kit should include a torch, first aid kit, portable radio, spare batteries, bottled water, non-perishable food, insurance policies and other forms of identification or ownership in sealed bags, just in case any damage to your home or business is substantial. By the way, do you know where to look (what frequency) on your radio for emergency information?
Stay Alert – Stay alert to any emergency warnings. During bad weather and in emergencies such as bushfires, you can keep up to date with warnings and advice broadcast on your local ABC radio station or by contacting the DFES emergency information line on
13 DFES (13 3337).
Check out our Facebook page:
www.facebook.com/Bunbury-State-Emergency-Service throughout the week for resources on how you can be more prepared for emergencies and the upcoming storm season. It is an excellent time to talk with your family and friends regarding an emergency plan, emergency kit, etc and being more prepared for natural disasters and emergencies.
